WHAT IS POLE DANCING?
Pole dancing incorporates elements of gymnastics, dance and acro on a vertical pole with the ability to perform poses, combos or choreography on either a spinning or static pole. Pole dancing is a fantastic way to tone up your body, build strength and develop your flexibility. Originating from strip clubs in the late 90's - dancers took the skills they learnt in the clubs, began running small groups to learn together until eventually opening studio's all across the world. Pole Dance is one of the biggest dance movements to happen, finding mainstream popularity around 2020/2021.
CAN I DO POLE?
ANYONE can do pole fitness regardless of gender, age, weight, disability, strength or flexibility. MPDA is an inclusive environment that welcomes people from all backgrounds.
DO I NEED PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE?
For Beginner classes & courses - no.
For all other classes on the timetable - yes.
Flexi Pole - min 6hrs pole experience
Pole Choreo - min 4hrs experience.
Heels Technique - min 6hrs pole experience.
Spin Pole - min 4hrs pole experience.
DO I NEED A BACKGROUND IN DANCE?
No. Due to pole requiring different skills from dancing, you will be taught everything you need to know in your beginner lessons, onwards.
A background in dance can be beneficial, but certainly not necessary.
I HAVE NO UPPER BODY STRENGTH, DOES THIS MATTER?
No. You do not need to have upper body strength when starting pole; this will develop as you attend classes over time. Pole does not also use upper body strength, it is an all over body workout, therefore all core aspects of strength will be developed over time
CAN I BRING A FRIEND?
You are more than welcome to bring a friend with you to your first class, as long as they have also booked a space on the register via BookFit and have paid. Don't worry if you can't find anyone to attend your first class with you; the atmosphere at MPDA is so supportive and friendly, there is no doubt that you will make new friends along the way.

IS THERE AN AGE RESTRICTION?
Yes. At the moment, MPDA only offers Pole classes to 18+ individuals. However, classes for children between the ages of 12-18yo are in the long term plan for the studio.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
A drink, comfortable fitness wear, shorts necessary to engage skin contact on the pole. An open mind and the will to learn. No jewellery. Do not moisturise skin 24hrs before class.
HOW DO I BOOK IN?
You will need to create an account on Teamup, then download the app, which is compatible on both apple and android. Once you have downloaded the app, search Marilena’s Pole Dance Academy – Lincoln (United Kingdom) you will then be ready to connect with the studio and book your first class!
HOW DO I PAY?
You can buy various different memberships, or single classes depending on what suits you best.

I GET TRAVEL SICK, IS SPIN POLE COMPULSORY?
Absolutely not. Spin pole is not for everyone and nobody at MPDA is made to do anything they don't want to do.
Some options for those who get travel sick but want to use spin pole are : travel sickness medication, travel sickness specific bracelet/arm band, or even ginger biscuits/drinks can help!
WHAT DO I NEED FOR HEELS CLASSES?
A minimum of 4hrs pole experience. A pair of pole appropriate footwear, knee pads and an outfit of preference that makes you feel good. A tripod for recording is super beneficial if you enjoy filming your practice sessions.

DO I NEED HEELS FOR HEELS TECHNIQUE CLASSES?
Yes.
Don't want to dance in heels but want to dance around the pole?
Pole Choreo classes are perfect for you. Socks will be needed instead to glide and move around the pole.
WHAT DO I DO IN OPEN PRACTISE?
If you have booked into an open practise session it is advised you document skills learnt in classes and then return to them to refine and advance in open. You can also self teach providing you train within your ability and use a crash mat.
